Gender Bending In our rock band, anaemic, we decided to take some pictures of Michael wearing girly accessories, with the name of one of our songs (1968) written on his bare chest in lipstick. Two of the photos from the shoot are shown below. When these pictures were uploaded onto the band's website, along with some less controversial photos, there were mixed reactions. Some people thought it was just a laugh, some small-minded people were scared or disturbed, and a small number of people decided to hate us for what we'd done. One of these people, who we shall call person X, decided to print the pictures from our website with 'funny' captions and speech bubbles on them. I was especially hurt by the comments on this piece of paper, which was posted for all to see in the DJ booth of the nightclub which we used to go to. Quite why someone could feel so threatened by such harmless material I don't know, but it just goes to show how outlandish people can get when they see something they don't understand. People were asking Michael if he was gay! Back
