Radiohead | OK Computer
It's quite rare for a band who write depressing songs to become popular, but Radiohead have just about managed it. 'OK Computer' is their third album, and consists of 12 songs which redefine indie in new and interesting ways. 'Paranoid Android' is a prime example of the way in which Radiohead manage to write an obscure song which still manages to appeal to the masses despite containing none of the instant thrills expected of most popular music of today. In many ways it could be seen as the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' of the '90s. It is a long song containing many sections, with parts for both accoustic and electric guitar included. By listening to this album you realise that, in the midst of so many pop songs written in a happy key, and using the same old tired, tested formulas, there is a lot of songwriting opportunity left in depressing songs.

'Subterranean Homesick Alien' is a beautifully serene track which sounds quite unique, whilst still managing to hold onto the indie roots from which Radiohead rose. By writing sad songs Radiohead seem to have inadvertantly perfected the art of the ballad. 'No Suprises' is pure musical genius, using an orchestra, xylophone, drums, bass guitar and accoustic and electric guitars to create a unique ambience which is difficult
not to like. One thing which is instantly recognisible when listening to the abum is that Radiohead have lost some of the heaviness of their music which made 'The Bends' and 'Pablo Honey' such compelling albums. While this is not necessarily a problem, it would have been nice of them to include the odd heavy track on 'OK Computer'. 'Paranoid Android' is the only song on the album which sounds even remotely heavy, and the heavy sections only account for roughly 30 seconds of that song. However, all bands must progress, and Radiohead have grown into a band whos experimental music, and ability for capturing twentieth century society's tendancies leaves most other bands crouching in the starting blocks.

Radiohead's tender innocence, combined with their melodic songwriting, makes them appealing to almost everyone. By standing out of the guitar-obsessed crowd, they have created a niche market and filled it perfectly while most other bands are busy copying each other. The mix of intelligently written songs combined with the endearing nature of 'OK Computer' make it a modern day masterpiece.
