Nirvana | Nevermind
Many people have joined the great debate over which of
the two most recent Nirvana albums - 'Nevermind' and 'In
Utero' is the best. In my opinion, both are masterpieces,
each with it's own good and bad points. Let's take a look
at 'Nevermind'.
Unlike 'In Utero', 'Nevermind' is a lot heavier in parts,
with only two melow songs ('Come as you are and
'Something in the Way'), but because of this the album is
much more consistant without being repetitive, thanks in
part to Kurt Cobain's excellent songwriting ability. Each
song is perfectly written and executed (Butch Vig gained
quite some credit for producing the album), making this
an album which, in many people's opinions, is one of the
best albums ever.
The album begins with 'Smells Like Teen Spirit', possibly
the greatest and most popular grunge anthem ever written,
progressing through classics such as 'In Bloom', 'Come as
you are' and 'Lithium', and that's not even half way
through the album! One tiny criticism is the lack of any
minor chords, which basically means no sad-sounding
music, although Kurt gets around this on 'Something in
the Way' by using accoustic guitar to play bare,
lingering power chords which sound really sad.
The sheer genius that is 'Nevermind' is one of those
albums that, when played at full volume on a decent
Hi-fi, is one of the best albums ever. The great feeling
that heavy, emotional songs such as 'Lithium' give you
has to be felt to be believed. For this reason, combined
with the consistantly high quality of the album, everyone
should own this album. End of story.
