Ash | Nu-Clear Sounds
In my humble opinion, 1977 was one of the best albums ever - certainly one of the best albums of the 90's, and I knew that there was no way on earth that 'Nu-Clear Sounds' was going to beat 1977 in my eyes. Indeed, when I first heard it I was more disappointed than I thought I would be. Looking back, however, I suppose I was a bit harsh, because, despite its failings, Nu-Clear Sounds is still a great album.

It starts well with 'Projects', a guitar-led track which simply oozes Ash from every chord, complete with Mark's bass turned up a lot louder than we're used to from other bands. Track two, 'Low Ebb' disappoints at first but improves with every listen until is shines through as one of the best songs on the album. Musically, it seems that Ash have moved on a lot since 1977, and you get the feeling that lead singer Tim has nothing to prove anymore. You can also forget any chance of another sick party or similar event at the end of the album, because Ash say they have matured a lot since then. Nevermind.

Half way through the album Charlotte and Tim contribute their songwriting abilities together on 'Numbskull', a track which stands out as an absolute classic, featuring the turntable scratchings of Dick Kurtaine. Admittedly, the album does tail off a bit after that, but not enough for anyone to stop listening. 'Fortune Teller' is pure mediocre material, and goes to show that it is possible for Tim to write the odd piece of crap now and again.

If you are thinking of buying this album, bear in mind that your opinion of Ash may degrade significantly. Of course, if you're a fan you'll already have it, in which case you can bugger off and read something else. Actually, do that anyway, because I've said my piece!
